Daymaniyat Islands Diving Guide: Marine Life, Rules and What to Expect

The Daymaniyat Islands are the best-known dive area near Muscat. This guide covers what makes the reserve special, what lives on its reefs, and the rules every diver should know.

Ask divers in Muscat where to go and most will name the Daymaniyat Islands. The islands sit off the coast of Seeb and Barka, a short boat ride from Muscat, inside one of Oman's best-known protected marine areas.

Here is what to know before you dive there. Octopus Oman runs scuba diving in Daymaniyat Islands daily from Seeb Port.

About the Daymaniyat Islands Nature Reserve

  • Location: off the coast of Seeb (Muscat Governorate) and Barka (South Al Batinah Governorate).
  • Size: nine main islands, with a protected area of about 203 square kilometres covering land and sea.
  • Protected status: established as a nature reserve by Royal Decree in 1996.
  • Getting there: about 25 minutes by boat from Seeb Port.

The reserve protects coral reefs, nesting turtles and seabirds, which is why access and activities are regulated.

Marine Life You May See

Sightings change with the season, the site and the day, but these are the animals the Daymaniyat Islands are known for:

  • Sea turtles: hawksbill and green turtles nest on the islands and are often seen around the reefs.
  • Coral reefs: hard and soft corals, including old reef formations, form the backbone of every dive.
  • Reef fish: parrotfish, butterflyfish, schools of snapper and the Oman anemonefish, which is found only in this region.
  • Rays and reef sharks: sometimes seen on sandy areas and along the reefs.
  • Whale sharks: rare, seasonal visitors, most often reported from late summer into autumn.

No operator can guarantee a sighting, but a good guide knows where animals are most likely to be on the day.

Dive Sites Around the Islands

The islands have many dive sites, with names like The Aquarium and Garden of Eden among the best known. On Octopus Oman trips, the guide chooses selected sites on the day based on sea conditions, currents and the experience of the group.

Certified divers make two dives at different sites, with a surface interval and refreshments in between. Uncertified divers make one guided dive. If it is your first time, read our beginner's guide to scuba diving in Muscat.

Reserve Rules and Permits

  • Permits: visitors need an entry permit from Oman's Environment Authority. On Octopus Oman's shared trips and its private Daymaniyat scuba diving tour, permit fees are included in the price.
  • Seasonal landing ban: landing on the island beaches is not permitted from 1 May to 31 October to protect nesting wildlife. Diving and snorkelling from the boat continue.
  • Do not touch or stand on coral, and keep your fins and gauges clear of the reef.
  • Never chase, touch or ride turtles or any other animal. Give them space and let them pass.
  • Take nothing: no shells, coral or souvenirs from the reserve.
  • Leave no rubbish, and choose a reef-friendly sunscreen.
